THE BACK STORY
The renovation of our bathroom has been one hell of a ride. We had intended to have the plumbing completed before moving back into the property but as life would have it, we were without a shower for nearly a month! And there’s nothing like the stench of an unwashed person to get you chummy with your local gym and use their showers on a daily basis.
Rick and I are proud to say that we smashed out the bathroom demolition ourselves which included carefully chipping off the floor and wall tiles and removing the shower/tub, the toilet and hanging vanity. More often than not they’ll be a surprise, just waiting for you when renovating. Our surprise was that there were no supports were the shower once was!
With the help of a professional chippy additional supports were put in place for the new and improved shower and we were up to cutting and screwing blue board across the bathroom surface to protect and level out the flooring. Once installed we tried our hand at waterproofing the areas in which we were installing the shower, toilet, vanity and flooring.
We then roped in a professional for the tiling as we were feeling a little out of our depth. However after watching the process we’re now feeling confident to tile the laundry! I also learnt my first lesson in how to choose the ‘right’ white paint when I initially painted the bathroom Berkshire white only to find it was way too yellow against the pure white tiles. So it was swapped out for a flat white.
The total cost of the bathroom is approximately $3000 which includes all products and labour. One of the main ways I saved money on my bathroom renovation was by keeping the original layout and just updating the fixtures. So now I’m wondering have I inspired you to go forth with you own bathroom renovations?
